what kind of studio lights to buy one softbox or 2 8oo watts strobe lights with umbrellas?
I am looking to buy some lights for portrait photography. I'm looking at a 60 x 30 inch softbox for a 400 watt Strobe light, or is it better to get 2 800 watt lights with 2 umbrellas. which one of the lights would be better to buy.
definitely the strobes. I'm not a fan of rectangular or square softboxes. I think octagonal look better in terms of catchlights. You can also do shoot thru umbrellas instead. It mimics an octagonal softbox but instead of $100 its about 15. I have 2 400 w/s Britek strobes that I use as a set and one pair of 300w/s SP Systems strobes as well. The britek kit has an octagonal softbox. I use the softbox as my key light and a reflective umbrella as a fill. The SP strobes I use a shoot thru umbrella and a reflective umbrella or a beauty dish that I made and a reflective umbrella. The beauty dish is way powerful, so that strobe is turned down to 1/4 power or less. Its been working for me pretty well. Definitely have better results with the strobes. I used to use constant lighting... I don't see myself going back to it very often.

In the 1930's the strobe light was a common sight on police vehicles and fire trucks. In fact, the strobe light is probably one of the longest used emergency lights in the world because it is so effective at what it does. The high visibility of the strobe means it's ideal for emergency warning lights and that doesn't have to be on vehicles. Strobes are often seen in alarm systems and in many other places such as airports, ports and even in homes. The strobe is a very powerful light and that is one of the reasons for its continued use today.
The strobe light is the perfect advanced warning light as we all recognize it and will act accordingly when we see it. Flashing lights we will sometimes ignore but the rotating strobe conveys more of a sense of urgency, which means we act quicker. Many home alarm systems incorporate a strobe, which is activated when the alarm goes off. A strobe light can often be found at exits in buildings, they will only be seen when an alarm has been raised, and the building has to be evacuated. The strobe light in building alarm systems will often show and highlight routes and exits out of the building.
A single beacon strobe light is probably one of the most recognized emergency lights in the world. Police departments the world over have used and continue to use the strobe light on vehicles. The power of the strobe is it is a light that can be seen from any angle and in many poor light and weather conditions. Newer LED versions of strobe lights are very powerful and with some clever lenses can be seen even in the brightest of sunshine which is where many emergency lights fail to be seen. High intensity light is needed on emergency vehicles and that is exactly what the strobe provides.
Modern lightbars often have a strobe light incorporated into them along with the take down, ally and traffic advisor lights on police vehicles. It just goes to show just because something is relatively old and some would call antique can still provide a very valuable resource of lighting today. You may thing that strobe lights or beacons aren't very versatile but many will have different flash patterns and some can have a dual color depending on the needs of the emergency vehicle. Stationary vehicles do benefit greatly from a strobe light as they pinpoint that a vehicle is not moving and act as a hazard warning.
The strobe light can be mounted on vehicles either permanently or temporarily. The permanent mount would be screwed onto the roof of the vehicle. The temporary mounting can either be magnetic or suction, although with the suction cup varieties you have to be aware of the rules regarding their use in your particular state. Strobes can be fitted internally in vehicles and are often seen on the dash of vehicles used by doctors, nurses and other medical professionals on call. Simple, effective and very iconic in image, it looks like the strobe light is here to stay.
